The Georgian Rugby Union (GRU) was founded in 1964. It was part of the Rugby Union of Soviet Union from 1964 to 1991. The Independent Georgian Rugby Union was established on 27 May of 1991. It is the governing body of rugby union in Georgia. It organizes the Georgia Championship, Georgia Cup, the Georgia national rugby union team and the Georgia A national rugby union team. It became affiliated to the International Rugby Board in 1992. It is based in Tbilisi.

The GRU is divided into 4 divisions. The most prominent division is the Men's Professional Division. However there is also a Men's Collegiate Division, a Women's Professional Division and a Women's Collegiate Division. The Men's Professional Division focuses on Atlanta, yet this division also hosts clubs across Georgia and also in South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama.
The 2011 Rugby World Cup qualifying process will end with a playoff to decide the 20th and final qualifier. Four teams, the best non-qualifier from each region, except Oceania, will compete for the last place at the 2011 Rugby World Cup finals in New Zealand. The winner of this playoff will compete in Pool B, along with Argentina, England, Scotland and Georgia.
The playoff will be contested on a knockout basis, with a semi-final and a two-legged home and away final. One semifinal featured Romania, the winner of the European Nations Cup Champions Playoff Series, and Tunisia, the loser of the African final. The other was between Kazakhstan and Uruguay, the second place finisher at the 2010 Asian Five Nations and the loser of Round Four of the Americas qualification, respectively.
